AgricultureOverviewAgriculture is one of the most hazardous industries in the nation. Farming is one of the few industries in which the families (who often share the work and live on the premises) are also at risk for fatal and nonfatal injuries. Fatal injuries constitute a significant burden on the agricultural sector, as indicated by the annual average of 806 fatal occupational injuries that occurred during 1992–2002. During 1982–1996, an annual average of 145 on-farm deaths occurred among youths under age 20. Fatal occupational injury rates in the agricultural sector, though decreasing, averaged more than four times the rate for the private sector during 1992–2002.
